In the Utility Management Basics module, the participant will learn why we should notice our utilities; the basics of how a drinking water and wastewater system function; the value of water; and the importance of utility viability.

The best management practices modules are based upon North Carolina’s Statewide Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Master Plan: The Road to Viability. The Infrastructure Best Management Practices module will discuss ways to ascertain critical areas of drinking water and wastewater systems, those areas most in need of repair / rehabilitation / replacement, and how to develop a prioritized list of infrastructure to repair / rehabilitate / replace. The Organizational Best Management Practices module will discuss information related to determining levels of service and key performance indicators as well as the need for good communication between boards, staff, and customers. The Financial Best Practice Management modules will discuss what makes for a financially sound water and / or wastewater utility and initial steps that can be taken to move a utility in that direction.

In each of the remaining modules, the participant will learn about best practices associated with each and first steps they can begin implementing in their systems within a few weeks of completing this training.
